Take the dangers of sun exposure seriously

Summer is the peak season for sun exposure, which can lead to harmful effects, including skin cancer, if the skin is not protected.

According to the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, approximately 20 Americans die from melanoma every day. In 2019, an estimated 7,230 deaths (4,740 men and 2,490 women) were attributed to melanoma.

To raise awareness of the dangers of sun exposure, the council has designated May 27 as National Sunscreen Day. The goal is to raise public awareness about skin cancer prevention and the vital role of sunscreen products. The day gains momentum each year as people become more aware that healthy skin starts with smart sun habits.

The day provides increased education about the importance of protecting the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, the dangers of sun exposure, and the role of sunscreen in preventing skin damage.
