Will artificial intelligence replace formulators?

Shiseido has developed a mist-type suncare product using VOYAGER, its AI-powered formulation development platform, with launch planned for summer 2026 under its fibona open innovation program.

 Four “fibona” activity plans are:

1- Collaboration with startup companies

2- Collaboration with consumers

3- Launching beta versions with speed

4- Creating a new research climate

VOYAGER system integrates more than a century of internal expertise and over 500,000 formulation data points, enabling researchers to generate and evaluate tens of thousands of potential formulations at scale.

Shiseido says an upgraded AI recommendation function can autonomously propose formulations by combining multiple technical approaches—including cosmetic-specific knowledge that has historically been difficult to digitise, such as ingredient interactions and emulsification mechanisms.

Shiseido’s use of AI is intended to shorten development cycles, support less experienced formulators in reaching commercially viable outcomes, and identify new consumer-driven opportunities—such as UV protection that feels light, intuitive and enjoyable through added fragrance and colour elements alongside SPF performance.
