Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is used in cosmetics primarily as a solvent and fixative in fragrances, but also as a film-forming agent in hair and nail products and a plasticizer in nail polish. Unlike some other phthalates like dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and dimethylphthalate (DMP), DEP is still commonly used in cosmetics today and is generally considered safe for use.
