Magical Cosmetics Using pH-Sensitive Dyes

In today’s cosmetics market, we encounter lipsticks, balms, and blushes that are highly attractive by changing color during use. Color-changing ones are very popular. These attractive products adapt to the unique chemistry of each person’s skin and provide a specific color for the individual.

These dyes are colorless in waterless products such as lipsticks, blushes, and lip balms, and when used, their chemical structure changes and their color changes under the influence of the skin’s pH and humidity. Depending on the pH of the individual’s skin, color changes can occur from light pink to red. Other factors such as the person’s skin texture and body temperature can also affect the tonality. The most important of these dyes are:

D&C RED 27, D&C RED 21, D&C RED 28

These dyes have a lactone form in anhydrous environments and are colorless, but when exposed to acidic and aqueous environments, they turn into a carboxylic form and change color.
