Opacifying agents are insoluble or semi-soluble particles dispersed in a liquid formulation to scatter light and create a milky or creamy appearance. They do not contribute to the cleaning power, but they:
• Improve visual appeal
• Mask ingredient separation or discoloration
• Make the detergent look thicker and more “rich” (often associated with quality by consumers)
Common opacifying agents in liquid detergents are:
1. Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer
– Widely used in commercial liquid laundry and dish detergents
– Stable, effective, and easily dispersed
2. Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂)
– A white pigment that adds brightness and opacity
– Also used in paints and cosmetics
3. Ethylene Glycol Distearate (EGDS)
– A waxy ester; provides pearlescent/opaque look
– Common in shampoos and body washes too
4. Stearic Acid Derivatives
– Fatty acid-based opacifiers
– Help thicken and opacify naturally
