Sodium monofluorophosphate(SMFP)
Category: Antiplaque
Sodium monofluorophosphate (SMFP) is an active ingredient (API) for use as an anti-caries agent in toothpastes and mouth rinses. MFP produces fluoride, which blocks glycolysis and exchanges with the hydroxyl group of the hydroxyapatite crystal of enamel. As a result, oral bacteria produce reduced amounts of acidic compounds, and enamel hydroxyapatite, partially converted into fluorapatite, becomes more insoluble. SMFP can hydrolyze to free fluoride and phosphate during storage. Therefore, it is important to determine fluoride and MFP in MFP solid to evaluate API before using in products.
