New active ingredient from blue biotechnology to address inflamm’aging by Seppic

Addressing the growing “well-aging” and “skin longevity” trends, Seppic drew inspiration from the marine world to develop MACRO’AGE™.

According to the company, the ingredient is designed to support the skin’s natural recovery, addressing the inflamm’aging phenomenon (superficial chronic inflammation) which degrades the skin barrier and extracellular matrix over time, leading to visible signs of skin aging.

Seppic produces MACRO’AGE™ using its Celebrity™ biotechnology platform, which cultivates macroalgae in bioreactors. According to Seppic, the active ingredient is derived from a microscopic form of the Macrocystis pyrifera algae, enabling access to specific active molecules that would otherwise remain inaccessible through conventional processes.

According to Seppic, MACRO’AGE™ supports mature skin through a dual action on inflammation mediators and skin structure:

  • Inhibits pro-inflammatory mediator LTB4 while stimulating and protecting specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) such as Resolvins and Maresins (ex vivo).
  • Improves skin architecture (in vitro and ex vivo) by stimulating the synthesis of Collagen I and Hyaluronic Acid, with reported efficacy to retinol , an ingredient known for its properties in skin renewal. MACRO’AGE™ helps protect Collagen I and Claudin-1 proteins from inflammation-induced degradation.

Seppic stated that MACRO’AGE™ is COSMOS- and Nature-approved and contains 100% natural-origin content according to ISO 16128 guidelines. The ingredient is also Halal-certified, suitable for vegan formulations, and compliant with Chinese regulations, including IECSC and IECIC.
